Penny is an International Board Certified Lactation consultant with a wealth of experience working with Mothers to reach their breastfeeding goals.
I’m a mother of three married children, all living on different continents and a proud grandmother of five grand kids.
It’s been my greatest joy to watch my daughter and daughter-in-law breastfeed, sometimes against enormous odds.
Breastfeeding is not the sole responsibility of a woman, it is a societal responsibility, and everyone needs support to succeed. We have lived and worked in a number of countries in Europe and traveled extensively.
I’m an avid reader, researcher, love wildlife and walking and enjoy quilting and crochet. Having seen first-hand the difference breast milk has made in the lives of vulnerable infants, I’m passionate about supporting breastfeeding mums.
I’m an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with a background in nursing, midwifery and community health.
Both my Masters and PhD degrees were focused on breastfeeding, one on supporting women to sustain breastfeeding when they returned to work and the other on a feeding buddy programme to support breastfeeding.
My approach would always be to help and support the client to reach her specific breastfeeding goals by providing her with options and support using evidenced based information. An introductory session would gather the necessary background history and information and offer options and suggestions acceptable to you. A follow-up session or two would help to check progress and adjust solutions, should that be necessary.
Every woman’s situation, experience and goals are unique, there is no one size fits all solution to breastfeeding challenges. For babies to thrive, mothers must thrive too physically, mentally and emotionally. My hope would be to be able to tailor a response to suit the need of each individual mother-baby partnership and foster an atmosphere to help women relax and enjoy their babies.
My experience includes having run child health clinics, breastfeeding support groups, supporting and counselling many women on breastfeeding matters and coordinating a human milk bank for babies orphaned as a result of HIV.
During this time I interacted with and supported the generous breastfeeding donor moms. I worked within the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health in Durban, South Africa conducting research around breastfeeding and human milk banking. Together with a team I conducted breastfeeding training courses for health care professionals.
I’ve published a number of articles in academic journals on breastfeeding and human milk banking and have spoken at a number of national and international conferences.
Keeping up with the latest research excites and inspires me.
